About Tumbuna Tours
Tumbuna Tours is a Milne Bay-based tour operator dedicated to sharing the rich, often untold WWII history of Papua New Guinea with visitors from around the world. Based in Alotau, we specialise in guided experiences for cruise ship passengers, offering a window into one of the Pacific War's most significant — yet frequently overlooked — chapters: the Battle of Milne Bay, the first Allied land defeat of Japanese forces in WWII.
Our name, "Tumbuna," means ancestors — a fitting reflection of what we do. Every tour is built around stories passed down through generations of local families, connecting visitors not just to historical sites and relics, but to the people and communities who still call this land home. Our guides aren't reciting facts from a textbook; they're sharing living history, shaped by the memories, oral traditions, and lived experience of Milne Bay itself.
We work closely with our sister business, Sunrise Adventure Cruises, to offer seamless, well-timed shore excursions designed specifically around cruise ship port schedules — private, small-group tours that respect your time in port while giving you a genuinely immersive experience.
Whether you're a history enthusiast, a curious traveller, or someone with a personal or family connection to the Pacific War, Tumbuna Tours offers an authentic, respectful, and deeply local way to understand what happened here — and why it still matters.
